I share the concerns of campaigners trying to stop the demolition of part of the former Jewish Maternity Hospital. I and my fellow councillors are doing all we can to try to convince Peabody to not demolish our precious heritage sites and I have instructed Council officers to continue to have robust dialogue with Peabody .

This issue does highlight a bigger problem; how can we protect the borough’s vanishing Jewish Heritage.

It is important we act to ensure that future generations can be enriched by our Jewish heritage as past generations were. To that end I will be holding a meeting with heritage organisations including English Heritage, the Jewish East End Celebration Society and local organisations and representatives of the Jewish community, to discuss how we can better ensure that our Jewish heritage in Tower Hamlets is best protected and preserved.
